School districts that have successfully improved their IAQ

Irving Independent School District, Irving, Texas
        + A student who repeated 3rd grade with poor math skills was placed in 3 Gifted and Talented
           classes in Middle and High School, including Math (!) after successful accommodation of his
           chemical sensitivities.

        +  Implemented a Pilot project to implement the EPA's "Tools for Schools" IAQ Management
            Program and the Texas Department of Health's (TDH) technical Guidelines to improve IAQ in
            an elementary school in conjunction with the EPA, TDH, American Lung Association of Texas,
            and the American Environmental Health Foundation.

        +  Is expanding the "Tools for Schools" and TDH Guidelines to all elementary schools district wide
            during the 1998/1999 school year

Thomas Jefferson Middle School, Jefferson City, Missouri
        + Implemented a "Fragrance Free" policy to accommodate an asthmatic student who is triggered
            by perfume.  The "Fragrance Free" policy includes the students basketball team and all opposing
            teams and officials.  The team went 10-0 in the 1997/1999 season.

        +  Is implementing the EPA's "Tools for Schools" as a state "model".

L.H. Coffin School Health Task Force, Marblehead, MA

            + Have implemented EPA's Tools for Schools.  A great example of how an active
             parent/community/school administration team can work together to improve the health and
             Indoor Air Quality environments for all students.

         +  An example of how to resolve a serious problem with diplomacy by combining advocacy,
             community spirit and positive, healing actions and avoiding the public animosity that often
             develops in such situations.
